What Is an Arabic Font?

An Arabic font is a digital typeface that renders the Arabic script. Unlike Latin fonts, Arabic fonts have to solve a specific challenge: letters change shape depending on their position in a word.

🔗

Connected Letters

Arabic is cursive — letters within a word connect. Good fonts produce smooth, natural connections.

Contextual Shapes

Most Arabic letters have four shapes depending on position (isolated, initial, medial, final).

Diacritics & Ligatures

Diacritics mark short vowels; ligatures fuse common pairs into single shapes.

One Letter, Four Forms

The letter ع (ʿayn) shown in its four positional forms. The shape changes; the underlying Unicode character stays the same.

Arabic Calligraphy Font Styles

These are digital fonts influenced by calligraphy — reusable typefaces, not hand-composed calligraphy. For real composition see the Arabic Calligraphy guide, or design one in the Calligraphy Generator.

Naskh-Inspired

Readability-oriented forms suited to longer text and publishing-style layouts.

Kufic-Inspired

Angular, geometric appearance for short display text. Historical Kufic differs from modern geometric Kufi-inspired fonts.

Thuluth-Inspired

Large, decorative forms with strong vertical movement — best for short display. A font is not equivalent to manually composed Thuluth.

Diwani-Inspired

Curved, flowing, dense — suited to names and short phrases.

Ruq'ah-Inspired

Compact handwriting influence with an informal tone — distinct from a real person's handwriting.

“Islamic calligraphy fonts” is a use-case phrase (religious headings, Ramadan/Eid graphics, devotional text) rather than a precise category. Choose reviewed fonts with strong diacritic support, never use Quranic text as a generic specimen, and remember that typography doesn’t verify religious accuracy.

How to Choose an Arabic Font

Six quick steps: (1) define the use, (2) check readability, (3) test the actual Arabic text — not a Latin preview, (4) test all needed characters (letters, diacritics, numbers, punctuation, Latin, Persian/Urdu if required), (5) verify the licence for your use, (6) test across browsers, devices and design software.

There’s no single “best” Arabic font — the right choice depends on your use, size, characters and licence.

Arabic Font Licensing and Availability

Being able to preview a font doesn’t automatically grant unrestricted commercial rights.

Open-Source & Free

Most fonts on this site come from Google Fonts under the SIL Open Font License. Free for commercial use, embedding and redistribution.

!

Bundled / Proprietary

Fonts like Aldhabi and Andalus ship with Microsoft software. Not redistributable outside that software.

$

Commercial

Sold by type foundries. Keep licence documentation and follow exact terms.

Rule of thumb: for commercial publishing, use either a Google Fonts / OFL-licensed Arabic font, or purchase a proper commercial licence.

Availability & Fallbacks

Web Fonts

Loaded by your site (e.g. Google Fonts / @font-face) so every visitor sees the same face.

System Fonts

Depend on the visitor's device — a bundled font may be missing elsewhere.

Fallbacks

Specify a tested fallback category (Arabic sans, Arabic serif/text, or system Arabic) — a fallback is never visually identical.

For a guaranteed look regardless of the viewer’s fonts, export an image from the Arabic Font Generator.

Frequently Asked Questions About Arabic Fonts

What is an Arabic font?

A digital typeface designed to display Arabic-script characters, handling right-to-left flow, connected letters and contextual shapes.

What are the main Arabic font styles?

Modern, traditional/text, display, handwriting and calligraphy-inspired. See Main Types.

What is the best Arabic font for reading?

There's no single best — readability depends on size, medium, spacing and glyph support. Naskh-family text fonts (Noto Naskh Arabic, Amiri, Markazi Text) are a strong start.

What is an Arabic calligraphy font?

A reusable digital font influenced by a calligraphic style. It isn't the same as hand-composed calligraphy — see the Calligraphy guide.

Is a Thuluth font the same as Thuluth calligraphy?

No. A font may be influenced by Thuluth without reproducing the composition and script rules a calligrapher applies.

Where can I compare Arabic fonts online?

Use the visual explorer above — type your own Arabic text and switch styles.

Can I download the fonts from this page?

[State your actual policy.] This page doesn't host font files; we link to official sources (and a verified download resource when available).

Can I use Arabic fonts commercially?

It depends on each font's licence. Open-source/OFL fonts generally allow it; system and commercial fonts have their own terms — check the official source.

What is a good alternative to Aldhabi?

For a similar traditional feel that's free and cross-platform, Noto Naskh Arabic or Amiri. See the Aldhabi profile for the comparison criteria.

Does Rakkas support Latin text?

Rakkas is an Arabic + Latin display typeface. Confirm the exact character support shown in its profile before relying on it.

What is the difference between Arabic and Arabian fonts?

"Arabic font" means an Arabic-script typeface. "Arabian font" is looser — sometimes Latin fonts merely styled to look Arabic. Check that a font actually renders Arabic script.

Why do Arabic letters change shape?

Most letters have isolated, initial, medial and final forms depending on position — see One Letter, Four Forms.

Can one font support Arabic, Persian and Urdu?

Some do, but character coverage varies and must be tested — don't assume support for Persian/Urdu-specific letters.
